About us

“The Future of Ukraine (Sokal Region)” is a registered charitable foundation dedicated to helping schoolchildren from low-income families in the city of Sokal in Western Ukraine. We are guided by the indomitable values of love, kindness and selflessness.

Chrystyna Chase (née Lukomskyj) first had the idea of creating the foundation in 2005. Having emigrated to Canada from Ukraine as a child in 1945, she kept Ukrainian culture alive in Edmonton, Canada, through her work as a Ukrainian language teacher and an active member of various Ukrainian organizations. When she saw that Ukraine was emerging as an independent country, she looked for ways to uplift Ukraine even further. In Chrystyna’s opinion, the most effective approach was to support the country’s future: its youth.

In 2005, Chrystyna connected with her cousin Yuli Lukomskyj of Sokal, a city in Western Ukraine, to implement her vision. Having retired from his profession as both an engineer and a public servant, Yuli was pleased to take on the challenge. As an inventor and community advocate himself, he was keen to support and enable youth who were making choices about their future.

The first project they funded was an essay writing contest. Yuli worked with schools in the region to provide prizes for 10 participants who wrote essays on the topic “Who do I want to be? How will I achieve this?”. This initial project served as a catalyst for a team of caring, like-minded people in Sokal to volunteer their time and resources to broaden the scope of work. The effectiveness of the project grew over time as more donors supported the cause, more volunteers were drawn to help, and more children were able to participate and benefit.

Out of this initial work, the charitable foundation called “The Future of Ukraine (Sokal Region)” was born. The foundation was registered by Yuli Lukomskyj with the aim of helping schoolchildren, primarily from low-income families, set their sights on a bright future.

Since its creation, almost 20 years ago, the foundation has inspired hundreds of children to dare to dream, provided them with self-confidence, and supported them in achieving their goals.

The foundation could not have done its work without cooperation from the regional school board and the Sokal regional district. Donors from across the world generously fuelled the foundation’s work. The majority of the donations came from the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia. Funds were collected through a network of Ukranian community organizations and church groups who felt strongly about supporting their country of origin.

As the foundation is almost 20 years old, many of its original organizers and donors have aged and some have passed away. The programs are still delivered by enthusiastic teams in Sokal whenever enough funds are raised on an annual basis.

We aim to prolong Chrystyna’s and Yuli’s original dream forever, by providing a place for donors from around the world to learn about the foundation’s work, share news and achievements through social platforms, and make donations.

Thank you in advance for sharing our story and for your generous support.
